Saint Joseph Mercy Health System completes first outpatient total hip replacement surgery

HOWELL, Mich. – (Aug. 19, 2015) – Saint Joseph Mercy Health System (SJMHS) performed its first outpatient total hip replacement surgery at St. Joseph Mercy Livingston hospital, which enables patients to return home the same day as their surgery.

Advancements in minimally invasive surgery and newer pain management techniques have enabled this surgery to be done on an outpatient basis, allowing patients at St. Joe's who qualify to go home typically within eight hours after surgery.

Minimally invasive surgery techniques do not damage the tendon or muscle, resulting in less pain for patients and the ability to walk sooner following surgery. Patients benefit from better range of motion, shorter recovery time, less soft tissue damage and blood loss, and the ability to recover in the comfort of their home, with the oversight of a home health care nurse and physical therapist. In some cases, patients may be able to start outpatient physical therapy services immediately.

"St. Joe's is on the leading edge of a growing trend in orthopedic surgery requiring less and less recovery time for these surgeries," said Dr. G. Victor Gibson, D.O., a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, who performed the first surgery at St. Joe's. "It's really exciting to see how improved techniques and technology over the past 15 years have reduced patient hospital stays from a week down to eight hours."

Candidates for this outpatient surgery are patients with no underlying major disease and average body weight. Patients will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

St. Joe's has a number of outpatient total hip replacement surgeries scheduled over the coming months, and Gibson expects to perform roughly 100 of these surgeries within the next year. Outpatient total hip and knee replacements are projected to be a customary procedure available at St. Joseph Mercy Brighton's innovative new Short Stay unit--the largest known freestanding overnight care unit for outpatient care--when it opens in 2017.

Outpatient total hip replacement is part of a SJMHS pilot program launched in July, which began with a partial knee replacement done on an outpatient basis.
